We just got back from eating dinner at Oregano’s in Tempe with my parents (and my brother John, seen below). My dad’s leaving for Indonesia on Saturday. I think it’s really cool that he’s going .. Seems like quite a journey. And when he gets there he’s going to be speaking and encouraging people .. which is exactly what he should be doing because he’s the most encouraging person I’ve ever met in my life!

On another note, this is wierd. To load the film at the very beginning of a roll you have to shoot some blank pictures to advance it to frame one. I guess I was pointing it up while advancing so I caught this picture of the sky at the time. Camera’s are wierd. I’m totally blown away by what they do. Sort of capturing moments but not quite. The whole idea of it blows my mind. We’ve only been able to do this for a few hundred years.

Here are a few more photos from the Lomo LC-A camera… This is a picture I took right before the Lion King musical started. That’s Jeremy, my brother in-law. was suprised how velvety and red the ceiling looked.

Today I found this place I now call the “edge of the earth.” It’s not too far from work either. Standing there, I feel like I’m on another planet.

What if I fell off? Did you see the moon today, Krys? It was really big. I thought I could reach out and touch it but I knew I couldn’t. Then I got this strange feeling.

    • Katy 8:34 pm on February 23rd Permalink | Log in to Reply

I get that too!! But I don’t want to actually reach out b/c then maybe the moon would look incredibly far away for the rest of my life…

I needed a phone with a keyboard so I bought the Nokia 6800. The first one I got had a faulty screen. The second and third had broken buttons. The fourth one had a software error.

Today I got the fifth one.. When I took it out of the box, it had two extra screws just sitting on top of the keypad! The girl at T-Mobile had never seen anything like it! I hope they don’t go to anything important.

OK … seriously. I can’t believe you got a 5th phone! With screws loose … somehow there’s a message there!!!!!

      Note to self…don’t get a Nokia 6800.

And beat David over the head with his next time I see him…

which of course had better be soon, because his will probably be broken by tomorrow meaning he won’t be carrying it with him, and therefore I will be unable to rip it out of his hand and consequently thwack him with it.

This was right before the sun went down completely. After the reds are gone, the sky goes to grey then to black. I lost my tripod bag it was so dark .. It smelled so good up there though .. I didn’t see a single person. I have no idea how I made it back to my car.

Right before the sun went down I heard coyotes howling .. they were so loud. At first I thought it was just a bunch of kids .. but then it was like the whole mountain errupted with spasmatic insane yelping .. It was so loud, I’d never heard anything like it. The sounds came from these mountains ..

David, that catcus image is AWEsome
My favourite is also your hill image – how amazing is light, eh? It creates a completely different world using the same perspective – that’s why I think I like clouds so much… and sunset/sunrises.

Sometimes I’m jealous that, as a boy, you can walk around the desert by yourself without having to worry too much about… stuff. Of course,I don’t begrudge being a girl; it’s just those ‘safety issues’ in my head that are always at the surface…

Hey thanks KT! I don’t really stray too far from the road sometimes.. I think I’m done taking photos for a while though. You can take over during for the next few rainy days!

Here are some more pictures from my new Lomo camera. I’ve only had it for two days now and it’s starting to make a little bit more sense. I am once again totally happy with the final results. I haven’t had to enhance any of these images with Photoshop .. They have a strange quality that I like .. This was this morning.

This a picture of Craig in the breakroom. We were just coming in from standing in the rain outside ..

The camera is wierd though, because I never know what it’s going to focus on. In the picture below, it was set on “infinity” but for some reason it wanted to focus on that little cactus.

This picture is wierd because I have no idea what that thing in the sky is. When I look close at the negatives, it seems like it’s something with wings .. like a moth or something..

This is one of my favorite pictures so far .. I like how the light just barely brought out the path.

I got my LOMO in the mail today from St. Petersburg. It really didn’t take that long to get here. It has this strange smell .. we all think that’s just what Russia smells like. The only way I can explain it is “sweet gasoline.” This is what the package looked like before I opened it.

This is the first picture I took with it.

Here are a few pictures outside on the patio at work.

At lunch we went to a Italian restaurant.. we all sat around this huge table.

I’m happy with these first pictures .. I was a little worried this camera wouldn’t live up to it’s reputation. It’s exactly what I was hoping for: unfocused, saturated, unexpected.

This morning I was looking around the kitchen trying to figure out where this strange smell was coming from. I thought it was something that stuck in the sink drain. It’s been around since Tuesday but I couldn’t figure out what it was.. Finally, I realized it was the roses from Valentine’s day. Our table was covered in them and there are some full stem ones in a vase by the sink .. Pungent.

It rained again. “The Apprentice” was on and the snail came back to watch it again.

I get this strange feeling when I close my eyes and try to remember things. Even the recent past doesn’t seem real – Like nothing has really ever happened up to this present moment. It would be cool to lay out one image from every day of my life, from the first one to today. I pressed together just a few months worth of images and when I stare at it I remember everything, but it feels so distant. I get that same strange feeling .. Look closely at the square below then click it.

If you don’t see a movie here, then I guess it didn’t work.

Yeah it’s wierd. I can’t believe how many individual events happen in such a short amount of time. I’d like to put together something like this for a friend who’s been capturing similar images for over a year .. Really, I wish I could do this with images from dreams.

I went out to the desert today .. I was suprised at how green it was. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the desert so alive. All these little green plants slowly soaking in the water.

I used to come out to this spot while we were creating Kingdom to relax.. I remember everything being brown. Some day, when I’m somewhere else, this is how I want to remember the desert.

A cool, light breeze – Standing out in the middle of it all waiting for the sun to appear through the clouds.

David, thank-you so much for taking your pictures, and for writing about being outside. I am feeling a little cooped up right now studying for my exam week, but I know that I can click on your site when I’m sitting at the computer & feeling weary of work – and those images always refresh my mind.

Everyone says how unusual it is that we are getting so much rain, but since I’ve never been here this time of year before, I don’t know what to expect… and I love the rain.

I am so looking forward to my school’s ‘spring break’ – then I can also traipse around exploring… I know there must be so many ‘hidden’ places that we drive by every day, and other places waiting that are well-worth a road trip.

Yeah it’s crazy how close we are to this strange expanse of desert. We’re in the middle of it! And whenever I’m out there, outside of the city, I can’t remember ever seeing another person. Maybe it’s because the desert is so huge, there are enough places for each seeker to be alone .. Or maybe it’s just because everyone’s inside!

Today is another beautiful day, but I’ll be inside working on a project for work in the dark on the computer.. maybe we should switch – You should take today off and let me know what it’s like out there..

When it rains, make sure to check your windows for snails. They like to peek inside your home and watch TV.
