What is everyone talking about? All these words … Mostly, I’m referring to all the words and phrases used in reference to experiencing God. Things like “walk in the Spirit” or “let God work through you” … I just can’t connect the phrases to the action they are referring to.

If you said, “Go, walk the dog” I would know exactly what to do and who to do it to. But if you said, “Let God love through you” I would find it hard to know what to do next.

Now, I’m not questioning the people who say these things. I’m not questioning whether they associate an action with what they are saying. I’m simply saying that I don’t know how to process the words they are saying.

I guess all I can do is not say phrases that aren’t associated with something actual in my life. And when I hear a phrase I don’t understand, I’ll ask for more details on what it means to the person saying it.

I imagine people might think I’m just being annoying… but truly, I’m just trying to understand.

I think a lot of the phrases come from biblical statements like, “live by the Spirit” in galatians. or the idea of being the body of Christ to the world and loving others as he would.

Another big one is Col. 1:27- “To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory” but Paul calls this a MYSTERY, not so much an action or a feeling. Christianeese is an interesting language and if you dont know you could easily say the wrong thing at work.

you can borrow my Christianeese For Dummies book if you want to

Admitting you do not understand is a good first step towards the pursuit of truth. It is the way of humility and dependance (2 unheralded values in this American culture).

You are not alone. I believe your lack of understanding of such phrases is common to many Christians today, a reflection of the disconnect between leader and layity. I think it is due to lack of discipleship and one on one training along the lines of “follow me even as I follow Christ”.

These phrases describe various aspects of a “pattern” or “way” of living that would have been modelled and taught to christians in the first century. Paul modeled Christ’s way of living to the churches…and his letters call attention to that model when correcting or reminding. Paul would have taught them what it meant to “put on the new self”, or “live by the Spirit” and “keep in step with the Sprit”. PHIL 4:9 (and many others)

We should be able to point back to our fathers (most desirable), mentors (next best), or someone else who taught us to:
      - walk by faith not by sight
      - “walk”, “pray”, or “worship” in the Spirit
      - fight with weapons not fashioned by human hands
      - put on the full armor of God
      - have the fullness of Christ dwell within

Like many others, unfortunately no one filled this role in my youth. But praise to God for He promises to be faithful where men have failed, to see that the shepherding (mentoring and guiding) gets done.
      EZEKIEL 34:11-15

Tonight I had dinner at Thai Rama.

Do you see that “Call In Orders Only” sign? Well, so far EVERY time I’ve called in an order – someone answers the phone, asks me to hold, puts the phone down on the counter and never picks it up again. Then for the rest of the night it’s busy! It’s the strangest thing. I then have to drive down there.. order.. and wait. I think that sign is a trick – or some sort of a test.

Before I went in to eat, I realized that there was this GIANT painting in the sky. I took a photograph of it – but it really doesn’t even come close to the original. They never do.

Inside Thai Rama, Sean and I were talking about the ways (or way) of realizing the purpose of life.. I didn’t quite realize the purpose of life, but I did realize something. I could sense something shift a bit in my mind. I can’t quite put it into words, but I think that is a good thing – or, that is part of the realization.

Later, we were sitting in my car, in the dark with the engine running, and as he was talking (and explaining and praying) I realized that the conversation we were having had happened so many times in so many forms in so many places for so many years, that truly – in the end – they were words – words are just words. This forever stream of uncountable words. I think I am starting to see something true in the simplicity of action. It’s obvious that action is more important than words, but I’m starting to realize it – starting to believe it.

Earlier today, (I think it was about 10:56am) I realized that every word I say (every word that is heard) is real to the person I’m saying it to. They are listening and processing it.. it has a strange sort of permanence I never realized until today.

These two realizations are not profound. I think that’s the point though.. some days you just realize things that are true and you change a little bit.

While I was inside Thai Rama eating, the beautiful painting faded away into darkness. There’s something true in that. I love that. That makes sense. It would have appeared and faded even if I wasn’t here to see it.

That’s true – I probably wouldn’t have left the coffee shop and changed locations had it not been for Thomas calling me.

Hopefully I am not tapping into my 15 minutes of fame by posting here ;-)

Thanks Tom for the tip…and David for the talk and the trust.

I drove home ambivalent. Happy from a great time with a new friend…yet longing for the more of heaven…when all that remains is FAITH, HOPE & LOVE.

      Love trumps all.

My Lomo had film in it! I don’t usually take pictures during the summer.. the film melts. But today I thought I’d take a few pictures. And when I developed the film I found some old shots – I don’t even remember taking them. That’s why I like film cameras. Those captured, forgotten shots.

    More Lomo Photographs

I watched the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory yesterday. If you fast-forward through the songs it isn’t all that bad. Craig thinks that the character playing Willy Wonka has some similar traits to Amalie.

What do you think? Does the new Willy Wonka have some similar traits to Amalie? Jamie doesn’t think so. I now know for sure that the old Willy Wonka did not.

      OK … a little disturbing. Craig’s right, I think!

Of course they look like because the same actor plays both parts. Actually its all from three weeks of acting and they just pulled out scenes and put them together to make two seperate movies.

It was originally filmed for a german hot pants commercial.

I’m with Tom – you can TOTALLY tell that both of those actors are wearing hot pants made by Germans. How else would you get that freaky expression on your face?

Today I went to work. I was supposed to stay home – On Friday at lunch, Craig, Robert, Thomas and I decided we would make Monday a holiday. But, in the end I had to go in. Some days I’d rather work then not. There is so much to do and so few people.

Peter’s quarantined downstairs. I built a little prison for him in our kitchen. He was quarantined in my office but not anymore. Now he can’t wake me up at five in the morning. And Cricket scratched my screen so I’m pissed. Don’t get a cat.

I ran into Mark on Sunday morning. It was weird because every time I think about Mark a few days later he appears! I figure at some point we’ll probably even talk or hang out again. It’s weird when years pass by so fast. When we were like 20, we made this video of us talking to ourselves in the “future” – in about 4 years it will have to be watched.

I called this blog “to-show” because I wanted to put stuff up here to show – but today, I don’t have anything. I’m tired. Good night.

Jamie just said that my blog is boring because I “never” update it. I’ve been distracted lately working on the infrastructure of a secret project at work. I’ve just had all these weird logic problems floating through my head – there hasn’t been room up there for much else.

Pretty much all I can show you is what I see all day:

Well.. I guess I can show you teaser images of some of our projects without revealing any details.. right?

One of the games we’ve already finished has me (bike), Aaron (unicycle), Robert (skateboard) and Craig (scooter) riding around, having fun.

One of the games involves a robot.

Some of the stuff I’m working on isn’t a game. Like this. It reads an XML document and delivers what you see below.

I am just about to finish an isometric pathfinding environment. I wish I could show you what it really looks like – but instead, here’s the boring grid I use while testing.

Well, that’s wierd. My phone’s not working. Half of the keyboard is broken… I wonder if those screws were actually needed? Dare I get a sixth one? Hmm..

    • David Mulhern 10:01 pm on June 5th Permalink | Log in to Reply

Don’t worry, I can’t get a sixth one… they don’t have them. Well, on the website anyway. We’ll see if they’re in the stores still!

OK … seriously, this is just you wishful thinking that this phone doesn’t have a major design flaw!!!

      Get a Treo!!!!
