A weblog is nice for those times you want to check in one someone but you really don’t want to talk to them. You can catch up on the latest in their life without giving anything of yourself in the exchange. For the most part this weblog is useless for that because I don’t actually post what’s going on in my life… until today.
Work: I am working at a company called OdysseyWare (odysseyware.com). I am the creative director, but around there titles don’t really matter. All that matters is what you do and what you complete. For the most part, my day consists of:
- Experimental Projects: Whenever someone wants to see a proof of concept I will mock it up. Usually I use PHP and Flash to get the prototype up and running quickly. Sometimes the prototype is used as the actual product.
- Creating Games: We spend as much time as possible creating games. The only limitation is that the person has to learn something from the game. Everything else is limited only by our imagination. The games are usually created in flash (with all backend in PHP)
- Creating Interactive Activities: This is translating something a student would do in the classroom into an interactive experience on the screen. (Like play with blocks and rulers – stuff like that)
- Websites: I also create the various sites and product demos and such (like odysseyware.com)
When we aren’t working we are having fun: taste tests, singing, bothering people, eating lunch, getting boba – that sort of thing.
Life: I am married now (to Jamie) and we are doing quite well. We are now very much in sync when it comes to the details of living. We do pretty much the same things as any other couple – watching tv, going out to eat, connecting with friends and family, keeping up the house, etc. On Tuesdays a small group of people comes over and we read the Bible and ask questions and challenge each other and talk about our lives and such. Jamie and I just finished a 5 month process of determining our goals, focus and purpose. In about a month Jamie is going to go visit some friends in Isreal.
Chloe is one of our cats – the one I like the least. She is very fat and hates to be pet (by me) and generally acts scared of the world all day. She makes me hate all cats sometimes. Which reminds me – we watched that movie “mirror-mask” last night (by Jim Henson Studios) and it sucked so much it makes me hate all movies – every movie ever made I hate because of mirror-mask. So beware, don’t watch it.
Projects: I also work on projects at home for fun. I really don’t do freelance work so I am able to spend “freelance” time working on projects I can own after they are finished. Currently my main projects are:
- Folionow: (80% of my project-free-time) This is a site which will allow artists of any visual medium to create a really nice professional porfolio quickly. I have already had version 1 up and tested it with a few users. Version 2 is almost complete and will be up hopefully by the first of March. (It is the 12th of March so that may not happen – but then again I’m doing it for fun so there really isn’t a hard deadline)
- Secret Project: (3% of my project-free-time) I’m also spending some time working on a secret project.
- Website Shell: (2% of my project-free-time) I’ve also been working on a simple PHP shell which can be customized, turned into a website and given to all of my friends and family.
- PHP Experiments: The remaining project-free-time is spent experimenting with PHP and Flash and new ways of using them together.
Interests: If you know me, you know I am either completely interested in something or not at all. Currently the things I am interested in are:
- Jamie: I am interested in Jamie even though she thinks I talk too loud (and too much, and mostly about nonsense)
- PHP: I like PHP for a lot of reasons many people would find boring.
- Anti-Science Theories: I like theories that challenge science (like the hollow earth theory) – mostly because they help remind people that “actual” science is just a bunch of theories too (more popular but still made up).
- Boba: I like Milk Tea with Boba but that is starting to fade. I have started drinking way more green tea than boba. We’ll see. I actually went to AZN yesterday and I didn’t like the milk tea – not the boba but the tea itself. That is a bad sign as it is the best milk tea in town.
I think that’s a fair update for now. If you would like to see some of the projects I’ve completed at work (and home) check out http://www.davidworks.com for a listing of some of my favourites.
